Hybrid power for highway upgrade project
93% Diesel Fuel Saving Achieved Powering Concrete Silo Aviation Light
Aggregate Industries produces and supplies a range of construction materials including aggregates, asphalt, ready-mixed concrete and blocks. The company also imports and supplies cement materials and offers national road surfacing/contracting services. As a leading player in the construction industry, Aggregate Industries is committed to creating a better built environment through sustainable approaches.
The single carriageway of the A30 between Temple and Higher Carblake was the only section of single carriageway between leaving Scotland and reaching Temple. This 4.5km section of road needed improving to become dual carriageway standard for the entire length. Kier were awarded the £33.3m contract of dualling the single carriageway involving the replacement of three busy road junctions with three overbridges.
To support the build, Aggregate Industries set up a temporary mobile batching plant within the Kier compound on site. By batching the material on site, vehicle miles and CO2 emissions are lowered.
Whilst aviation lighting isn’t normally a requirement for concrete silo’s, the batching plant site was located adjacent to an Airfield. Hence a power source was required to power an aviation light on top of the silo. A 20 kVA diesel generator was installed running 24/7 and Aggregate Industries wanted to find a more cost effective, sustainable source of power for the low load of 120 watts required.
Speedy connected a 3.5k kVA Cygnus® to the 20 kVA diesel generator to create a hybrid power system. As the aviation light required a constant low load, Cygnus® provided the primary source of power. Cygnus® only switched the diesel generator on, when the internal energy storage of Cygnus needed recharging.
Cygnus® provided silent power 24/7 for aviation light 93% of the time, consuming just 76 Litres of diesel each month.
