Hybrid power for wind farm build

ABB Resolves Diesel Generator Noise Abatement Order with Silent Hybrid Power

ABB is a leading global technology company in power and automation that enables utility, industry, and transport and infrastructure customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact.

The Project
The £1.3bn Rampion Offshore Wind Farm in the English Channel is being developed by energy company E.ON, alongside partners the UK Green Investment Bank Plc (GIB) will provide 400 MW of electricity, enough energy to power around 300,000 homes each year.

Spreading over 72 km² the new underground cable system connects with the subsea cable, taking the power from the offshore wind turbines to a new substation which connects to the national grid at Bolney.

E.ON is responsible for the construction, operations and maintenance as well as energy management services of the wind farm. Carillion are undertaking civil engineering and cable installation activities. ABB were awarded a turnkey contract to provide the onshore substation, and power infrastructure for the offshore platform of the wind farm.

The Challenge
The cable route passes through the South Downs National Park and so a sympathetic and proactive approach to the management of the project is key to successful delivery. The cabling links to a new electricity substation being constructed adjacent to the existing substation in the Sussex Downs.

Power was required for 15 ABB site cabins and therefore a 100 kVA diesel generator was installed. Being in the middle of open space countryside and despite installing sound barriers, the noise from the diesel generator running 24/7 was travelling to nearby residents. ABB tasked Speedy to find a quieter and cleaner power solution, in line with the wind farm objectives of reducing CO2 emissions, whilst being considerate to the local surroundings and residents.

The Solution
Speedy connected a Cygnus® 4 to the 100 kVA diesel generator to create a hybrid power system. Whilst all 15 cabins required power during the day, only 3 cabins required power overnight and at weekends (canteen, drying room, toilet and security). Therefore, Cygnus® 4 was set to timer mode providing power just to the 3 cabins overnight, whilst automatically switching the diesel generator on and off.

The Results
Cygnus® 4 reduced the runtime of the diesel generator by over 51%, delivering completely silent power without any intrusion to local residents during non-operational site hours.
